The .40 S&W cartridge traces its roots back to the 1990s when Smith & Wesson and Winchester combined efforts to produce a cartridge intended to fill the gap between the 9mm Luger and the .45 ACP.  The .40 S&W was specifically built for law enforcement with the same bullet diameter as the 10mm (.400 inches) on a shortened case. Used widely as a side arm by law-enforcement agencies, the .40 Smith & Wesson cartridge is an effective and versatile round. It's a faster load then a .45 caliber bullet and heavier than a 9mm bullet. The bullet has very good penetrating power, and as a defensive weapon, can handle most tasks.
